As we watch our Canadian athletes compete at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, I can’t help thinking of my old friend Joyce Fairbairn, and her current health challenges. As former Chair of the Canadian Paralympic Foundation, she would want to be there cheering our athletes in London. More »
I attended the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit this week, and it brought together the personal and the political in a big way. Right now we lose nearly 8 million a year to cancer and in fifteen years the number grows to over 13 million. What is clearly true is that a global strategy immediately comes face to face with the startling imbalance of resources both within countries and between them. More »

After trashing federal science projects across the country, killing 3,000 environmental reviews, gutting the Fisheries and Parks departments, muzzling scientists, mangling the National Research Council and politicizing the National Energy Board – it’s no wonder Canadians were taken aback with Stephen Harper’s recent claim that he relies on impartial scientific assessments in making decisions about pipelines. The Prime Minister’s annual trip to Canada’s North is always tough for me because it never deals with the real problems facing the North. This week-end marked the 70th anniversary of the Dieppe raid. Canadian troops and members of the Royal Canadian Air Force led a raid on the beach of Dieppe on August 19, 1942. Of the 5000 Canadians who went on the mission, only 2200 returned to England - many wounded - and as many as 2000 Canadians taken prisoner never returned home. One who did return home was my father's younger brother, Jackie, who had joined the RCAF (the Oshawa squadron), and flew a Spitfire at Dieppe, shooting down seven enemy planes and winning the Distinguished Flying Cross when he was less than 21 years old. In her speech at the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) 145th Annual General Meeting, Federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq lauded the federal government’s “accomplishments” in health care. She also accused those critical of her government’s record of engaging in “over-the-top rhetoric” and advised that “we should stick to the facts” when debating health care. Yet her own address, laced with rhetoric and platitudes, was far from factual. The Minister should heed her own advice. Here are six examples of where she failed to do so: More »
