I was in Ottawa last Monday. Having free morning, not sure what to do, I ended up in front of the building where HQ of LPC are located. I decided to take elevator up and see how the place looks like. I had a slim hope that I would bump into our moderator André and have a chance to express in person my gratitude for a fabulous job he is doing not only moderating but also responding to our inquires as well.
The first I stumbled upon the reception area without anyone attending to it. It wasn’t a big problem as there is a button for a bell and a phone that you can use to get in touch with anyone in the office. It turned out that the lack of a receptionist was one of many measures the party applied to save money.
By using the phone I reached lovely Jennifer who came out informing me that a volunteer coordinator – Tina would take care of me in a couple of minutes. In a meantime I was offered coffee and a soft drink. I felt very welcomed and like between friends. When Tina showed up, she apologized that I had to wait since they were extremely busy with the major event taking place in the evening. I was surprised – it even didn’t occur to me that an apology was required. Then Tina took me for a tour of the offices. I was shocked to see how few staff are there. Another money saving measure. I was shown the print shop and a demonstration was given to me how buttons are made. I haven’t realized that the operations of LPC are so efficient. Buttons for our events are made on premises with the help of volunteers.
And there was André! In his cubical, with headphones on, in front of the computer screen. He managed to find some time to chat with me before rushing back to his desk. It was a real pleasure to be able to shake hands with a such dedicated and welcoming group of people.
The point I’m trying to make is very simple – if you wonder if your donations are well looked after, be assured that no penny is wasted in LPC offices.
Hi Jarek, thanks for the post. Indeed it was great to meet and chat with you. I’m glad you were also able to attend the events in the evening. Drop by again next time you are in Ottawa and I will try to do the same when I am in your neighborhood! Cheers my friend.
Thanks for posting this refreshingly candid description of the LPC’s HQ operations. They obviously deserve our full support and appreciation. Well done Ottawa, but remember that there may be times when austerity is misplaced if it were to begin to hurt the greater good of our cause; a position I’m not in to pass judgement. Well done !
That’s so great to hear Jarek! Of course you mentioned your tour of the LPC to me already, but I’d assumed you organized that in advance. It’s good to know we have the kind of operation where someone can just walk in and, situation allowing, get a tour and be received well.
I do think many people over-estimate the size and resources of our central party operation, sometimes. I think even those of us who know not to over-estimate do so a bit. They’re doing quite a lot with very little, and they deserve much credit for it. I don’t know if there’s much we can do as individual Liberals other than be thankful for the good work of our staff. But I’ll promise if we’re ever out for drinks at the next event, I’m buying.
Again, good job everyone. And Jarek too, for taking the initiative to visit and to bring us back a candid report!
