OTTAWA – Liberal Critic for Industry, Science and Technology Marc Garneau will be traveling across Canada beginning Tuesday to consult Canadians on how to revitalize Canada’s scientific industries and discuss the importance of research and innovation in creating the jobs of tomorrow.

As part of this tour, Mr. Garneau will be meeting with stakeholders in industry, science and technology sectors in Southern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Beginning Tuesday, Mr. Garneau will be taking part in meetings in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. He will visit the Waterloo Centre for Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (CBET), the University of Waterloo Research & Technology Park, the Waterloo and Burlington Chambers of Commerce, as well as the Hamilton Health Science Centre where he will meet with researchers to discuss how Canada can strengthen research and build a more effective knowledge economy.

"Canadians are concerned about the dramatic job losses affecting so many of our industries," said Mr. Garneau. “While Conservatives have failed to recognize the importance of creating a coherent research strategy to create the jobs of tomorrow, Liberals are looking for long-term solutions."

According to Mr. Garneau, the federal government has an important role to play in helping industries prepare for future economic recovery.

“By cutting back on science and technology, this government has taken a very short-sighted view of our economy. Canada is falling behind other countries and losing competiveness in the innovative industries where we should be leading,” Mr. Garneau added.

Other stops on Mr. Garneau’s tour include Toronto’s MARS Innovation Centre, Winnipeg’s Stevenson Aviation & Aerospace Training Centre, Saskatoon’s Light Source Synchrotron, British Columbia’s TRIUMPH facility, the Council of Forest Industries, BC Bioenergy, and Ballard Power Systems and Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperative (AFCC).
