Biography
Mario Silva has served the people of Davenport as their Member of Parliament since 2004. At the time, he was the first Canadian of Portuguese origin to serve in the House of Commons. He was re-elected in 2006 and 2008.
In 1994, he was elected to Toronto City Council and was re-elected tice. In his time on Council, he held a number of posts including serving as Acting Mayor, Chair of the Economic Development Committee and Vice-Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission. He has also served on numerous boards including, the Toronto International Film Festival, Mount Siniai Hospital, the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada.
He holds a B.A.(Hons.) in International Relations from the University of Toronto; “Certificat de Langue Francaise” from La Sorbonne in Paris and a Masters degree in International Human Rights Law from Oxford University.
Mr. Silva has served as Official Opposition Critic in the portfolios of Labour, Treasury Board and Foreign Affairs (Americas) and is presently the Special Advisor to the Leader of the Opposition for Latin America. He has also served as Vice-Chair of the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights and the Vice-Chair of the Environment Committee.
He is also the Co-Chair of the all-party Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism.
Mr. Silva has received the Order of Merit of Portugal and in 2007 the President of the French Republic bestowed upon him the title of Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour (Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur), the premier order of France.
