L'hon. Denis Coderre (Bourassa)
Biography
Denis Coderre was first elected as an MP in 1997 to represent the Montreal-North riding of Bourassa.
He was appointed to cabinet in August 1999 as Secretary of State for Amateur Sport. Mr. Coderre was re-elected in the November 2000 general election and in January of 2002 was appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). On December 12, 2003, Mr. Coderre was appointed President of the Queen’s Privy Council, Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, Minister responsible for La Francophonie, and Minister responsible for the Office of Indian Residential Schools Resolution.
On November 26th 2004, to ensure Canada’s commitment to Haiti, Prime Minister Paul Martin appointed Mr. Coderre is Special Adviser for Haiti.
Mr. Coderre obtained a fourth consecutive mandate in the January 23, 2006 general election. He was appointed as official critic for Labour and Quebec Regional Economic Development. In January 2007, M. Coderre was appointed as official critic for National Defence. During the last session of Parliament, Mr. Coderre served as Critic for Canadian Heritage, La Francophonie and Official Languages.
In March 2005, Mr. Coderre received the rank of “Commandeur” of the Ordre de la Pléiade from the Canadian Branch of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF).
Mr. Coderre holds an Executive MBA from the University of Ottawa and a degree in political science from the University of Montreal. He and his wife, Chantale Renaud, have two children, Geneviève and Alexandre.
