Biography

One of Canada’s most experienced Parliamentarians, Derek Lee was first elected in 1988, and subsequently re-elected in each of the last six elections. Mr. Lee presently serves as the National Revenue Critic.

Mr. Lee is one of Parliament’s foremost experts on National Security and was a member of the House of Commons Justice Committee for over 12 years. He recently chaired the Interim Committee on National Security, which developed proposals on the creation of a permanent Parliamentary Intelligence Committee - an important step forward in the Government’s democratic reform action plan. Mr. Lee was Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, and was a member of the Standing Joint Committee on the Scrutiny of Regulations, on which he had served since his first term in office.

An engaging and knowledgeable representative of his Liberal caucus and party views, Mr. Lee is a regular guest on television and radio, discussing the issues of the day. He is recognized as an expert in the area of parliamentary procedure and reform and has published two influential works in this area: one law book on the parliamentary power of subpoena and another one on reforms to Parliament.

At home in Scarborough, Mr. Lee is a passionate advocate for environmental initiatives. He has worked tirelessly for the preservation of the Rouge Valley park system and serves as a voting member of the Rouge Park management board.

Born in Halifax, Mr. Lee obtained a bachelor of arts from the University of Toronto and a bachelor of laws from Queen’s University. Prior to entering politics, he practiced law in Toronto.
