Hon. William Rompkey (North West River)
Biography
Appointed to the Senate by the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien, Senator William Rompkey represents the province of Newfoundland, now known as Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Senatorial Division of North West River, Labrador. He has served in the Senate of Canada since September 22, 1995.
He is Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Selection and a member of two Senate Standing Committees: Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources, and Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament.
Over the years, he has been involved with Parliamentary groups including the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association. He is a founding member of the Liberal Caucus of the North Atlantic Assembly, in 1991. His areas of interest and specialization include education, training, and national defence.
Senator Rompkey’s early career includes serving as teacher, school principal, and first school Superintendent of Education for Labrador East. From 1972 to 1995, his career includes serving as a Member of Parliament, during which time he was a Parliamentary Secretary to various ministers (1972 to 1979), From 1980 through 1984, he held ministerial various portfolios including: Minister of National Revenue, Minister of State, Small Business, Minister of State, Mines, and Minister of State, Transport.
Senator Rompkey holds both a B.A. in English and an M.A. in English from Memorial University, and an Academic Diploma in Education from the University of London. He completed Post-graduate studies at the University of Toronto.
Senator Rompkey and his wife Carolyn Pike have two children.
He was born on May 13, 1936 in Belleoram, Newfoundland.
