This week, I was up in the House of Commons a couple of times asking the Veterans Affairs Minister about the discrepancy in funding by the federal government for funeral costs for Canadian Force Members and veterans.

Here was one of my questions:

Mr. Speaker, a Canadian Forces member receives $13,000 for funeral costs. A veteran…[En afficher davantage]

    • Glad you asked the question. You and the other sitting MP’s may need to take a different approach in Question Period. You seem to be walking into too many walls of Conservative contempt. Maybe if you asked more #real questions rather than one’s the media would be fit to cover. What I mean is, don’t ask questions you expect them to dodge. Ask…[En afficher davantage]

    • I’m not great at wording things but here goes:

      canadian forces member $13,000
      veteran member $ 3,600

service to country priceless, so why does this government value the life of a veteran at 28% of the life of a canadian forces member. They both gave their lives so you can sit in Ottawa. and debate this issue.

By the way my…[En afficher davantage]

    • This is a tough one for me because I believe that the government (or governments) has a greater responsibility to not only military personel but also to police officers, firefighters etc. who are killed in the line of duty or as a result of their service, than to those who die of natural causes. As to the amount paid for funeral expenses it should…[En afficher davantage]

    • I for one believe that the biggest cost to our national defense is not the equipment budget, but the human cost.

In recognition of this, all medical and funeral costs should be fully funded regardless of income.

    • This is such a difficult subject. Vets need help when and where they need it. Nevertheless – hold your fire – Vets from most wars did not, for the most part suffer from PTSD. Neither did the civilians who were suffering from those wars. I don’t mean from rationing or knitting mitts and scarves, but being on the ground where every minute of…[En afficher davantage]

      • ” Vets from most wars did not, for the most part suffer from PTSD”

I can believe that claims for PTSD are rising. How do we know that claims are proportional to mental health issues?

In my community, mental health services do have a stigma attached to them outside of the military. People inside the military have always made huge sacrifices for…[En afficher davantage]

Cannot believe the nerve of the conservatives. After fighting the vets in court for the past few years over clawback to their pension the cons lost and in May agreed not to appeal the decision.
Now they are trying to take credit for doing what the court said they MUST do.
Money wasted on a court case. More money wasted today on an…[En afficher davantage]

    Hello Sean,

Recently PM Harper announced a plan to adopt the “Helmets to Hardhats” campaign from the US. The idea, as you know, offers veterans jobs filling shortages of skilled trade workers in Canada.

I think as Liberals we understand this is just one of the many approaches that can be taken to help veterans find gainful employment…[En afficher davantage]

That said, we were beaten to the punch by the PC’s on this.

There are many many great ideas on all issues from Liberals. We should show the country where the creativity and vision is by publishing as many as possible.

    • I wish the Minister would listen to the question – ”what are those steps ?”

Surely blaming the Liberals for everything is going to get old eventually – the Conservatives have been in power for 6 years.
