#scitech #economy #environment The recent suggestion that Canada revive the Avro Arrow project may, if all aspects are considered, be found too costly to compensate for the added value to Canadian sci/tech/industry, but it deserves better than an instant reflex rejection of the proposal http://tinyurl.com/97mc9ka by a government overly committed…[En afficher davantage]

#scitech I’m curious as to what people think is the future of nuclear energy and research in Canada, especially post Fukushima. Anyone have some particular insight?
-
A good place to start would be to google ”nuclear energy research in Canada”. Have a look here for starters:

#scitech Sorry if this seems a bit specialized, but does anybody want to talk about Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credits? I’m waiting to see how the Conservative government responds to recommendations on changing what’s eligible for those tax credits.

#scitech Scientific evidence is sometimes a hard sell. Look no further than climate change. Some of those who discount it are actual scientists who feel certain they know the facts. And even though they are in the minority, they reach an audience that wants very much to believe them for a variety of reasons.Often the facts they present are…[En afficher davantage]

#scitech – I think that even if scientific evidence is a hard sell, it is abhorent that the government would take steps to stifle the research and the scientists if the research is showing that the government may be wrong….
-
You’re right Gary. The Harper government maintains a very tight control over what public service scientists are allowed to say. Some end up getting fired or shuffled for speaking out. Message control is paramount for them and if scientific evidence can damage their position on an issue, they do their best to make sure it doesn’t leak out, at…[En afficher davantage]

I agree that we need to be making sure our decisions are science-based, but I’m also wondering–where do you stand on things like #copyright reform or #telecommunications regulation?
I think more people are affected by those policies–afterall, what Canadian doesn’t know what it’s like to be gouged by their cellphone provider or ISP?

The Liberal Party (and I, as previous Industry critic) have been clear on a number of issues related to Copyright and Telecom. . We are in favour of Net Neutrality (I got up in the HoC about 2 years ago and said so) and we criticized the CRTC decision on Usage Based Billing.
We believe that a person should be able to copy protected copyrighted…[En afficher davantage]

Marc: Thanks for your excellent comments. Even though the Liberal Party is on board with the science of Global Warming they are not doing much about it.

Mike, you raise many points
First of all, the LPC needs to be clear about what it will do to reduce our national carbon footprint. As you point out, we recognize Global Warming but must propose clear measures to deal with it.

1. I think a non-food biofuel is better than a food-based biofuel (for obvious reasons) providing the GHGs released in the total life-cycle production and consumption of the fuel are an improvement on hydrocarbons and that the price is “affordable”, meaning perhaps more expensive but not out of the ball park.

I’ve been lucky enough to come to know many fantastic researchers. The one thing holding them back is funding! Many, lucky enough to have received NSERC grants spend (in my opinion) too much time reapplying and writing up new grants for different sources in order to just carry on their work. If a liberal government would support…[En afficher davantage]

A Liberal government needs to commit to funding basic science through increases to the NSERC Discovery Grant, Research Tools & Instruments, and Major Resources Support programs. These programs provide the core funding to researchers in diverse fields across the country. These programs must be the priority.

I hope that you have enough brains to understand hard science like chemistry and thermodynamics, both of which show the impossibility of humans being able to affect the climate. Agreed – Instead of ’suggested topics’ why not a list of all the tags that have been created.
-
I think that if you have a column for suggested topics as an idea pool for party members to delve into, and a separate column for what has been hash tagged would be best. These suggested hash tags are there to grow discussion in these key areas, but it is also important to show that other discussions are being had.

Thanks Kirk, yes we are working on these features

Glad to hear it.
BTW, not everyone knows what a hashtag is though there’s a blog post suggesting their use. The example of one is good but you need to break it down and state that it is just a # before a word used as a topic along with any other rules that apply.
That kind of detail is needed for more people than you’d expect. People who work…[En afficher davantage]
