As Carolyn mentioned, it was great to be able to participate in numerous sessions offered by LPC(O) during the weekend retreat in peacefull surroundings of the Muskoka resort (unfortunately it wasn’t the one where G8 Leaders met couple of years ago :-). It’s clear to me that LPC(O) is trying to provide the best possible support to EDA’s…[En afficher davantage]

Carolyn:
Education and jobs are probably the 2 most difficult issues to solve for the FNs in remote areas.
Engineers can give them clean water, proper sewers, good roads and warm houses in remote areas but education and jobs are more complex.
Good schools require good teachers who will stay in the community for more than 2 years. And they must…[En afficher davantage]

yup… we need to incent and train more aboriginal teachers …. and ensure pensions and incentives for non-aboriginal teachers to stay ….and feel comfortable with the content/curricula … that will ensure the secure personal and cultural identity of the students …

Carolyn:
I can follow the part about Aboriginal Teachers but do you honestly think we can get non-aboriginal teachers to live several years in these remote reserves for most of their lives. I don’t think its a matter of offering them more money. Like would you do it? Do you know anyone who would do it? -
Why would you suggest ensuring pensions and incentives for non-aboriginal teachers but not for aboriginal teachers, can you tell me the difference? Do you really believe it is distasteful for non-aboriginal teachers to live in remote reserves but it is OK for aboriginal teachers?

Thanks for the links. I was impressed with the amount of work that went into the Kelowna accord. One thing that surprises me is “Idle No More” was apparently started by concerns with C-45 and C-28 removing environmental regulations for lakes and streams, yet there is very little mention of the Environment in the Kelowna Accord. …[En afficher davantage]

I hope Shawn Atleo is referring to the Kelowna Accord in his discussions with John Duncan.I feel some of the Chiefs have thrown this thing off stride when the Kelowna Accord gives an excellent framework for the discussion.

Thank you Carolyn for raising the quality of discussion of the subject. I did not hear one of the Leadership candidates tell us that there is no quick fix for the Aboriginal problem. In my opinion the fix will take the better part of a generation. We can talk about schools not built and students not graduated but it seems to me that the elephant in the room is unfavourable deals with the FNs on resource development. It would seem that if Attiwapiskat had signed a fair deal with DeBeers that they would have had all the money they needed to build better schools.

Hi Carolyn:
Thanks for your comment. It would be interesting to look at the history of the Impact-Benefit contract that DeBeers developed with Attawapiskat.

” We have to redouble our efforts in Aboriginal education for non-aboriginal Canadians”

Great points,if we follow good results, but in politics these are
all dreams which never happen -
What is discouraging about this statement, is the public ( at least this citizen) assumes this as the base line for our political representatives, all party actions , members, public involvement.
We are looking for better- honesty, high standards, vision and fore site for all, instead we are struggling to get to the base line, described here. With…[En afficher davantage] -
Carolyn, I have to admit, that I was a little bit discouraged reading you post. You titled it “Enhancing democracy”; however all the points you made are basic principles of a democratic process. Collecting and hoarding memberships is a process mastered by candidates to sign up members and bring them in the last minute to EDA nomination meeting to ensure positive outcome of a vote. I think it’s immoral, however LPC seems to approve and allow it.

There is a seperation of reality and nice to haves here. You need to look at politics and how it is fought (not played). The Harperites would love us to die by these guidelines, and die we would.

Wow. And this is why we need to change our voting system to allow more women into the arena. Because these are all just common sense kind of things, along with integrity. Hello everyone! As our Critic for Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development, I want to start a conversation with you on #aboriginal and #northern issues. Let’s start by ensuring First Nations communities have the infrastructure needed for a decent standard of living (clean water, medical care, and well-built housing, for example). Once these communities are doing more than just surviving, then we can take a better look at things like the UN Declaration and what land claims are appropriate.
-
Infrastructure is essential, and the Auditor of General of Canada has repeatedly exposed Canada’s failures to provide safe drinking water, for example. But I would encourage you to take a look at the text of the UN Declaration (http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unpfii/documents/DRIPS_en.pdf) – it defines how we must move forward in partnership with the…[En afficher davantage]

I have a general question about the Aboriginial Affairs & Northern Development portfolio. What constitutes “Northern”? What matters to me is that the ecology of the North, already much changed, be allowed to develop on its own for a while (to determine how the Arctic as a “living environment” will untimately respond to the current problems in effect there.) One thing that I came to see last moth is that my reservation in Golden Lako, On is running out of room. Mutual respect must be the foundation of the relationship between Canada and First Nations, Inuit and Métis. 100% access to safe drinking water for 100% of First Nations on reserve – the only standard we expect for all other Canadians – cannot just be an ideal. We need a plan – what, by when and how?
