John McKay was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997.
He previously served as Chair of the Caucus Committee on Economic Prosperity during the last session of Parliament, and prior to this, Mr. McKay served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, and as a Member of the Privy Council. Prior to his appointment, Mr. McKay acted as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and as a Member of both the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration and the Sub-Committee on Organized Crime. He was also a Member of the Standing Committee on Finance.
Mr. McKay was Chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus from 2002 to 2004 and Chair of the National Liberal Social Caucus on Homelessness and Affordable Housing. He has also been a member of the Economic Development Caucus.
In 2000, Mr. McKay successfully sponsored Private Member’s Bill C-260 in the House of Commons, a bill that amended the Hazardous Products Act to mandate that all cigarettes sold in Canada be fire-safe.
Prior to his parliamentary career, as a practicing lawyer Mr. McKay was president of the Durham Law Association and executive member of the County and District Law Presidents’ Association. He is the recipient of the UTSC Alumnus of the Year Award 2000, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, and the University of Toronto Arbor Award.
Born and raised in Scarborough, Mr. McKay and his wife, Carolyn, have five children.
