5 great reasons to celebrate Laurier’s birthday

Born in 1841, Sir Wilfred Laurier was Canada’s Prime Minister from 1896 until 1911. He was also Canada’s longest serving Parliamentarian, and the Liberal Party’s longest-serving leader. Today is his birthday.

Here are five great reasons to celebrate the man and the tradition he is a part of.

5. You’ll be celebrating one of Canada’s great champions of Liberalism. They will be busy explaining away a torture scandal.

4. We have Laurier, King, Pearson, Trudeau, Chrétien… the list goes on. They have… anyone, anyone, Bueller?

3. Laurier pretty much saved confederation following the conscription crisis of 1917. They save themselves from controversy at least 3 or 4 times a week.

2. Laurier’s face is proudly displayed on the 5 dollar bill. Stephen Harper’s face is proudly displayed on this inflammatory flyer.

1. Laurier once said: “Canada is free and freedom is its nationality.” Harper once said: “It is imperative … to build firewalls around Alberta” and “Canada appears content to become a second-tier socialistic country.”
