Sitting on the dock of the bay in Richibucto. Eating Dixie Lee fried clams and watching leisure and fishing boats leave the wharf. A lovely boardwalk, full of lovely people – the Acadians.
But what was really moving at the official New Brunswick Day Ceremonies with Premier Shawn Graham was listening to a beautiful young Aboriginal woman sing “Oh Canada” in her own MicMac language, then French and English.
She recently sang at the opening ceremonies of the World Junior Track and Field Championship in Moncton as well. She wants to be an RCMP officer like her father.
It’s a long cultural distance from yesterday’s stop in English Rothesay but distance doesn’t matter when you’re on the road in New Brunswick.
It’s a shared space.
I’m just thinking what my Mom and Dad would have thought back in the late 30′s when they honeymooned in nearby Rexton. Their cabin was called “Linger Longer.” And that’s not a bad thought on a beautiful August 2nd day.
Now it’s off to the Miramichi. I understand there may be a few Irish there. That’s a good thing.
The Leader looks very comfortable in this setting. It must be the Maritimes… and that’s also a good thing.
