Since January, Canadians have been glued to their TVs, watching events unfold in Tunisia, then Egypt, and now, less peacefully, in Libya, Iran, Bahrain and elsewhere. Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Bob Rae has also been watching, and today he penned a short blog post outlining his thoughts on why Canada should do more to help those fighting for change. Here’s the beginning of his post.
The events this past month show once again that the “end of history” has definitely not come upon us. The hundreds dead in Egypt, Libya, Iran, Bahrain, and all over Asia and Africa are ample evidence that the fight for open, tolerant societies which allow for individual rights and accountable, limited governments that are themselves subject to the rule of law, is a bloody and difficult struggle which requires deep courage and commitment.
