Canadians have much to celebrate at the 85th Academy Awards

Posted by Scott Simms on February 22, 2013 | 4 Comments

Scott simms_updateAs we prepare to watch the 85th Academy Awards this weekend, we can once again take immense pride in the many nominations and accomplishments of our fellow Canadians.

For the third consecutive year, Canada is represented in the best foreign language film category. This year’s submission is the compelling Rebelle (War Witch), from Kim Nguyen and producers Pierre Even and Marie-Claude Poulin. Canadians will also want to congratulate Mychael Danna, nominated for best song and original score from Life of Pi, based on the celebrated book by Canadian author Yann Martel, as well as Guillaume Rocheron, nominated for this film’s stunning visual effects.

Canadians are similarly shining in the category of short film live action, including Yan England for Henry, Ariel Nasr for Buzkashi Boys, and Mino Jarjoura, who produced Asad. Finally, Doug James is to be congratulated for the Technical Achievement Oscar he received earlier this month.

I know Canadians will join in honouring our many nominees who continue to represent the best in Canadian film talent. This year’s Academy Awards are but the latest example of the exceptional skill and influence that Canadian artists have around the world.

On behalf of the Liberal Party, I extend my congratulations and best wishes to all our nominees this weekend. I will be watching the awards this Sunday and cheering on our Canadian contingent!

I read Life of Pi of Yann Martel. He did publish his letters to Stephen Harper and seemed to be very interested in politics.
Culture contents industry is high added value industry to generate a wide range of applied fields and new growth engine. Many countries are presently focusing on the culture contents industry as national strategic industry. I’ll watch the Academy awards with a hope that Toronto international film festival will have more fame and glamour than Berlin or Cannes film festival.

We Liberals put Harper in power because not enough people had the foresight to choose the right leader for the Liberal party.Dion???,,,Iggy??? and now we have these so called Liberals calling out Justen . With all the fodder we have on the cons why are we not taking advantage of this, but no we have to knock our own kind, WHF is this.My wife, daughter and I are supporters of this party, but we have to say if things continue as they are by stabbing ourselves then whats the use.
