SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HAWKESBURY AND CORNWALL — There have been unexpected developments here on the side of the highway, beside the Liberal Express.
This evening, Michael Ignatieff was supposed to make a speech at a Liberal BBQ in Cornwall, Ontario.
Instead, he made a speech at a Liberal BBQ in Cornwall, Ontario.
Oh, and the bus broke down along the way. The transmission died shortly after we left Hawkesbury. Despite the heroic efforts of our driver, the bus just couldn’t carry on.
We’ve all been there. You’re on a bus trip, and everything is dandy. Then, all of a sudden, the bus is stopped, the driver is tinkering with the engine, and you’ve just missed happy hour on the first night of spring break.
In our case, help soon arrived.
A convoy of local Liberals ferried Michael, Zsuzsanna, and most of the journalists to Cornwall. It was a wonderful symbol for the warmth and hospitality we’ve felt all day in Eastern Ontario, where cheering crowds met Michael and the Liberal team at every whistle stop, despite the pouring rain.
The rest of us — a few MPs, some staff, and a couple Young Liberals — are now on our way to Cornwall, tardy but determined. We’re on a replacement bus that drove in from Casselman. The second Liberal Express. “LE2″, if you will.
It’s the first day of a long summer. And if a bus malfunction is the most surprising thing that happens on the Liberal Express tour, then this Liberal, for one, will be more than a little disappointed.
