Ottawa 2012 Liberal Biennial Convention Reports

Posted by Mauril Bélanger on February 22, 2012 | 12 Comments

The Ottawa 2012 Liberal Biennial Convention was very successful at an important moment in our Party’s history.

All the sessions were well attended, in particular the constitutional amendment plenary.  Because of the many vigorous debates, we had to extend the discussion time on Saturday night. Even then we were not able to cover every proposed amendment which meant that we had to extend on Sunday morning.

This also meant that we had to cancel the presentations on the evidence based policy sessions and the Resilience of the Liberal Ideal sessions.  The evidence based policy sessions produced seven reports on the following topics:

These reports present the key points raised by the panelists, the Caucus members, and members’ online feedback as well as highlights of the question and answer session and notable ideas and suggestions.

The reports on the Resilience of the Liberal Ideal Sessions summarize the delegates’ discussions that took place during the roundtable and open microphone sessions.

Many members have requested a copy of these reports so in the spirit of openness and transparency we are happy to oblige and make them available for you to study and review.

On behalf of the Convention Organizing Committee, I would like to thank all those that took part in the convention activities, whether on site or on line, as well as all those involved in the organization of the convention.  Well done everyone!

We look forward to reading your comments.

Mauril Bélanger

Convention co-Chair and National Policy Committee Vice-Chair

    @ John McCulligh

    Thank you Sir
    I really liked your response

That is with out a doubt the most we can ever hope for is that people just be open to at least trust their own learning abilities and judgement and see the truth themselves rather than just see visions of frying pans and eggs cooking like the old propaganda tried to dictate you saw
Yes as the kids that watched those commercials, when they first came out are now President of the USA and admitted they used not only cannabis but cocaine as well

I hope all who do explore the liberal forums all challenge this themselves this way and then sees by doing so like you have so well just stated John that the issue should be addressed as it certainly doesn’t appear to be going away and Canadian citizens are being ruined for life needlessly with this issue

I didn’t choose this role I have played for 20 years ….hell I was even against it at first and was a military man and conservative minded
But my efforts to educate on this issue have shown me many things that changed my mind and many others that no citizen should not be alarmed about nor talk about if he truly does care about people

For heavens sake even the RCMP Dare Program officer who traveled to all BC schools died out here a few years back and it turned out he had heroin and cocaine in his veins and like so many others like him there was no where to turn but jail

No one set out to be an addict but when addiction is seriously looked at we soon discover we all are one in some form

Vancouver doctors as 20 year opiate addicts yet respectable as no addict is a problem with a ready supply or until they run out

The really harmful addictions are ignored as people become obese with legal drugs yet we have $109,000 a year just to jail teenagers for 6 harmless plants

I am tired of saying $10,000 a year for an education and $10,000 a year for assisted housing is much better and much cheaper for society

I know how I look and how I have looked doing this so long

We see the corruption and criminal nature of harper as the latest of his disgusting transgressions comes to light ….yet I personally already saw his brutality up close and up front sept 4 2008 and I am fully aware of the fight we need to win and how dirty the fight can be
    But
For some one like me John your post is very hopeful…thank you

I would have responded sooner but I have been in hospital being for the first time in my life pumped full of morphine and have so far still not even resolved my medical problems
    A long story
But …I just wanted to take the time to say great post John!

I hope others do the same !

Your opinion is welcome Kannan… I went to the convention on your side of the fence…arrived on Wednesday and went to work on educating myself on the marijuana issue. What I really concentrated on was the evidence based information. For two days I poured over the vast information on the net. The evidence against appeared to be murky at best while medical, judicial and moral evidence was largely on the side of regulation. Still I was not convinced, so on Friday afternoon I had a sit down with some of the young liberals who backed the resolution and after that came to the conclusion that not legalizing marijuana does far more harm than legalizing it. When the vote did come my gut was still telling me this was major step but my mind and heart were telling me it was about time we liberals supported regulation of marijuana.

And one point more Sir ….I am way beyond asking questions and can read…he says…

“”"Every moment was great, except legalize marijuana”"

Now if I may …imagine gays finally getting some political support and the chances of them being jailed and receiving life altering criminal records is now lessened because a nation main stream political party finally stood up for them and stopped being hypocrites

Imagine you personally know thousands of them…and their horror stories….and then see how his comment sounds to me

Yeah it was great except for the gays getting support…or the women or the transgender-ed…or the colored people…or take your pick !!

I borrowed 2500 dollars and took time off and went all the way to ottawa to help do this and worked my ass off 16 hours a day for 4 days as I was there thursday

You talk about my writing….I saw his and heard YEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAA

Like I was a less fearful SLAVE

I guess maybe when you do your research we can still be hopeful that you to are not one that wants to still destroy and beat us

    I am hopeful

    Cheers

Well dont shoot the messenger please….and yes please look at the issue

I have been beaten bankrupted and jailed by people who coincidentally also say as has been said in this

The comments section provides links and proofs that you can verify
your self and yes I agree with your strategy of checking yourself …please do

and I was only pointing out a
    very good source

I hope you do not write off this issue because I am flawed from not
seeing my children for two years as a jailed and innocent man in 1991

    You take care and cheers

While I thank you for the link, if I’m going to research something the last place I’m going to spend time is comments on an internet discussion thread. Anyone can comment and claim things as facts. I will begin with Google, Wiki and scientific articles. And while I’m encouraged by debate your response to M. Nair with a “those like you” statement drastically reduces your credibility. You did not even question why he opposes legalization. Perhaps he also would prefer decriminalization? You didn’t ask for him to clarify his position in any way. An outlook of “we will beat you” towards someone for having a different opinion on a single policy is symptomatic of what causes me to be apprehensive of any Conservative supporters. If the LPC is to truly be a party of the center every member should assume they will find at least a few policies that don’t agree with their personal views. That’s why it’s call compromise.

Thanks for the discussion, have a good day.

    @ chrisahl@cogeco.ca

Best way to do that is to read the resolution and more importantly the comments

    And the old comments

    @Kannan Divakaran Nair

No actually it didnt say it was just your opinion until this one but hey what ever
All I have to do is sign up two of friends to make your “opinion” irrelevant

And I plan on bringing thousands and already have brought hundreds

You and your friends can try and catch up but I have absolutely no doubt we will beat you as we have the high moral ground and those like you are more likely for the death penalty …jailing gays and keeping the vote from women

I must point out I did not say you I say those that agree with your stance on cannabis (marijuana is a slang word to mexicans also something those with your opinion also use)

    Cheers

I would have supported decriminalizing but I’m not convinced on legalizing. It’s an issue on which I’ll need to educate myself before debating further.

    Why is that Kannan?
You think its fine that one million canadians who out side of a plant are not criminals yet continue to become criminals?

Whether we stand as the sane or common sense party or not the industry will still exist

Up to 10 billion with no taxes and only going to crime

I think our resolution is great just 40 years late

Harper agrees with you though about the issue and right now is scared to death the liberals actually find the guts to use it

Me I dont think he should be too worried…I mean when you consider the liberal history with the issue

    Cheers
