It was another great night for Canada.
I watched the men’s hockey semi-final at the Langley Events Centre, with a beer in hand, and surrounded by a community’s worth of very excited fans.
If there was ever a game that could be faulted for being too exciting in the final minutes, this was it. But our boys pulled through, and you could almost hear the entire country jump off the edge of our
seats and onto our feet.
Bring on the Americans.
But not everyone in this town was watching the hockey game — and for 15,000 people in the Pacific Coliseum, this was a golden night for Canada.
Charles Hamelin took gold and François-Louis Tremblay took bronze in a rough-and-tumble men’s 500 metre speed skating short-track final. Half an hour later, they both skated to gold as part of Canada’s 5000 metre relay.
And that wasn’t it for Canadian medals yesterday; Cheryl Bernard’s rink won the silver in women’s curling, after a narrow loss in extra ends to the Swedes. Congratulations, Cheryl!
With 10 gold medals in the bank for Canada so far in these Games, we’ve already tied the record for most golds earned by a host country. There are more up for grabs today and tomorrow, but one thing is sure:
This weekend will be one for the history books.
