UPDATE
The Facebook group called “Proud to be a member of that ‘left wing fringe group’ called women” is a non-partisan initiative. The women in our office discovered their efforts a few days ago and were thrilled to support it. We made sure the message on our buttons was different so that people wouldn’t be confused. Buttons were distributed to all MPs who wanted them regardless of political party affiliation. We understand the group’s desire for this not to be partisan.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s shocking statements in Sault Ste Marie Sept 2 are causing an uproar among Canadian women.
On Sunday a group of prominent women in the media and other spheres launched a Facebook group entitled “Proud to be a member of that ‘left wing fringe group’ called women” that has already attracted over 1,000 members (t-shirts are on the way, apparently).
Today, a group of Liberal MPs including Marlene Jennings will be sporting buttons in Question Period that proudly declare: “I am not a left-wing fringe group.”
As you can imagine, Liberals are aghast at the Prime Minister’s comments. We encourage you to get involved and stand up to the Reform-Conservatives – a government that attacked pay equity for women in last year’s fall economic statement, cancelled the childcare agreements with the provinces, and have done nothing to stop the tragedy of Canada’s missing aboriginal women.
Here’s what you can do:
- Join the Facebook group via a link on Michael Ignatieff’s Facebook page. Please become a supporter while passing through.
- Post a blogger button to your blog (click here for instructions).
- If you’re in Ottawa, drop by Ms. Jennings office on Parliament Hill to pick up a free “I am not a left-wing fringe group” button.
Meanwhile, make sure everyone you know is aware of the Prime Minister’s hidden agenda. Watch the edited clip of Stephen Harper’s speech in Sault Ste Marie below and share it with family and friends. If you want to see the full 9-minute version, click here.
