Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement to mark the celebration of Vaisakhi:
“As Vaisakhi is celebrated in communities across the country to honour the birth of the Khalsa and the start of the New Year in the Hindu calendar, it provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the tremendous contributions of the South Asian community, and how our culture is enriched by the Sikh and Hindu faiths.
“In the gurdwaras and mandirs I have visited in my time as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, I have had the great privilege of witnessing how the spirit of goodwill, mutual respect and a profound understanding of our common humanity can unite and be such a force of good in our communities.
“This will always be cause for celebration in the processions and festivals that mark this time of year.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, I wish all Canadians a very happy Vaisakhi and a happy Khalsa Day.”
