Borys Wrzesnewskyj’s experience and advice has been a tremendous asset to me and I am pleased to appoint him as my Special Advisor for Emerging Democracies, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said today.
“Canada’s most important connection to these democracies emerging from historic occupation are the millions of Canadians with family and friends in that part of the world,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “In addition to the importance of these states to the evolution of Europe and the global family, the opportunities for trade and tourism for Canada with this region are significant.
“I look forward to working closely with Borys to further develop the policies and relationships necessary to maximize opportunities for Canada.”
Mr. Ignatieff was commenting on the appointment of Mr. Wrzesnewskyj as his Special Advisor on Emerging Democracies.
“I am truly honoured that the leader has given me the tremendous responsibility of serving as Special Advisor for Emerging Democracies. I was privileged not only to bear witness, but to take an active part in the processes that saw the flowering of democracies in former Warsaw Pact countries and in former Soviet Republics,” said Mr. Wrzesnewskyj.
“As I personally witnessed in Georgia during the civil war in 1994, these transitions were often difficult, but many countries that were part of the Soviet Block have emerged from totalitarianism into fragile but promising democracies.
“I look forward to working closely with Michael, Bob Rae and our Liberal caucus to both foster these democracies and ensure that Canada can benefit from our close and personal ties to so many of these countries.”
