HALIFAX– Liberal Finance and National Revenue critic Scott Brison made the following statement today on the government’s fall economic update:
“Today’s economic update demonstrates contempt for Parliament, contempt for young Canadians looking for work and contempt for the provinces. This is the fourth year in a row that Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has fled the nation’s capital in order to deliver his fiscal update beyond the scrutiny of Parliament and the national press gallery.
Minister Flaherty’s update receives a failing grade for not offering any jobs plan for students and recent graduates. Employment rates for our youth are at the lowest they have been in over a decade. Young Canadians and their parents are turning to the government for hope and a concrete plan to create jobs, but unfortunately this fiscal update proves that the Conservatives are not listening.
In addition, Mr. Flaherty has pushed the balanced budget date off for one more year. He’s been wrong on every deficit projection he’s ever made and there’s no reason to believe he’ll be right this time.
With today’s economic downgrade, it is more imperative than ever that Stephen Harper attend the upcoming Premiers meeting on the economy in Halifax.”
