Conservative Inaction on Youth Unemployment Continues

Posted on July 20, 2012

REGINA—Liberal Deputy Leader Ralph Goodale made the following statement today on the government’s announcement regarding youth employment:

“The Conservatives like to stand in front of a backdrop and tell Canadians that their top priority is job creation. But all that fanfare has done nothing to address a youth jobless rate that is now the highest it has been in a generation. And this recycled announcement is cold comfort for unemployed youth.

Our young people are still feeling the effects of the last recession and cannot find summer work to offset the costs of their education. They are feeling the pressure of limited opportunities and this government is only adding to that pressure. The Conservatives have closed student jobs centres across the country and have eliminated programs, such as Katimavik, that have proven to give Canada’s young people real professional development.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has warned of the long-term ‘scarring effects’ of limited youth employment opportunities and parents are worried that their children will have fewer chances to succeed. There are real ways the government can address these concerns. But some hard work must be done before the photo-op.”
