Conservatives Cannot Leave Provinces to Pick-up Tab on Refugee Care

WINNIPEG and VANCOUVER– Liberal Citizenship and Immigration critic Kevin Lamoureux made the following statement on the reaction of doctors and the Government of Quebec to the Conservative government’s cuts to refugee healthcare:

“Across the country, doctors and medical specialists are outraged and are protesting the abhorrent decision by this Conservative government to cut healthcare services to refugees, one of society’s most vulnerable groups. This Conservative government is sabotaging Canada’s proud reputation as a compassionate and welcoming nation that comes to the aid of people who are fleeing violence or persecution and helps them forge a better future.”

Liberal Health critic Dr. Hedy Fry continued:

“The reaction of the Quebec government and doctors across the country demonstrates the willingness of medical professionals to continue the tradition of altruism and public service. Yet again, Stephen Harper’s Conservative government is making decisions based solely on a rigid ideology and without regard for the provinces, which are left to foot the bill. This is unacceptable. What Quebec is undertaking is significant but only an interim measure, and it is unfortunate that the federal government created this situation in the first place.”
