Conservatives Fail on Student Employment

Posted on July 6, 2012

MONTREAL— Liberal Post-Secondary Education and Youth critic Justin Trudeau made the following statement today on Statistics Canada’s new student employment numbers:

“Young Canadians are facing the worst student employment rate in 35 years, yet the Harper Conservatives are doing nothing to address this crisis.

This government has consistently left Canadian youth to fend for themselves, with no comprehensive plan to deal with student employment, and in fact, cutting services that help students build their skills and find jobs during the summer.

Students depend on summer employment to help offset the high cost of education, including tuition, books and living expenses. When students cannot find jobs, they are forced to take on unmanageable levels of debt or drop out of school altogether.

This is precisely why Liberals have announced that we will focus our efforts this summer on highlighting youth issues and proposing positive solutions.”
