Liberal MPs Denis Coderre and Dominic LeBlanc today asked Stephen Harper’s government to attack the issue of financial crimes committed by crooked financiers by implementing comprehensive measures as soon as possible.
“It’s madness to see that these criminals can ruin the lives of honest Canadians and then are given ridiculously short sentences,” said Mr. Coderre, Bourassa MP and Quebec Liberal Lieutenant. “It’s time to act, and the Conservatives are doing nothing about it – Canadians deserve better, and Liberals will do better.”
The Liberals are asking the government to implement concrete and effective propositions to stop these “criminals in ties.”
“The Conservative government is always talking about attacking crime, but their proposed measures only punish criminals. We want to go further,” said Mr. LeBlanc, Liberal Justice Critic. “We have to put the victims first.
“We want to see improvements that primarily target sentencing, but also the investigation process, in order to facilitate and speed up its implementation,” said Mr. LeBlanc.
The two MPs spoke out after meeting with the victims of Quebec financier Earl Jones, who has been charged with bilking investors out of millions of dollars.
“My heart went out to those victims after hearing their stories,” said Mr. Coderre. “It’s frightening to see how a trusted person can get away with taking so much money. With these comprehensive measures, these malicious financiers will think twice before stealing from innocent people.”
