Amid reports that at least 65 other world leaders, including President Obama, will be attending the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, Prime Minister Stephen Harper must keep his promise to attend the climate talks.
“Ten days ago, Stephen Harper said he would go to Copenhagen if other world leaders decide to attend,” said Liberal Energy and Environment Critic David McGuinty. “The world will be there and Canada needs to be at the table.”
Three years and three ministers later, Stephen Harper still has no plan to tackle climate change. Rather than leading the world, Canada has been repeatedly called out for sabotaging the Copenhagen process.
“Canadians can see through the Conservative game plan of abandoning Copenhagen,” said Mr. McGuinty. “Everyone is used to the government’s pattern of big promises with zero follow-through. Copenhagen can’t be used as another excuse to further delay environmental measures they promised years ago.”
Canada is falling behind the world in clean jobs, renewable energy and energy efficiency investments, with the United States investing thirteen times more per capita to create new jobs in this growing sector of the global market.
“The challenge of climate change is not going away. We need to lead, we need to prepare for the future, and we need to be doing it now,” concluded Mr. McGuinty.
