233 Conservatives appointed since 2008 Election
Liberal MPs Wayne Easter and Marcel Proulx today unveiled a list of 233 Conservative insiders appointed to the Senate, courts, and government boards and agencies since the last election.
The appointees include former Conservative MPs, cabinet Ministers, campaign workers, past candidates, and top donors who contributed over $272,000 to Conservative coffers.
“Stephen Harper has rewarded Conservative Party bank-rollers with taxpayer-funded government jobs,” said Mr. Easter. “He is doing everything he once criticized.”
This comes after public accounts reveal that the phantom Public Appointments Commission Mr. Harper promised to establish spent $346,732 in 2008-09 – bringing the total cost to almost $1.4 million for a body with no staff, no power and no mandate to set standards for federal cabinet appointments.
“Stephen Harper promised to end to political patronage, but instead he is obsessed with rewarding his friends in the Conservative Party,” said Mr. Proulx. “He should be focused on creating jobs and protecting healthcare.
“Harper’s patronage frenzy is the latest illustration that his promises to Canadians are meaningless.”
