In their own words: Harper’s newest Senator on gay rights

Newly appointed Conservative Senator Bob Runciman has no qualms when it comes to speaking his mind about homosexuality.

Runciman has repeatedly linked homosexuality with bestiality and child-molestation:
“Conservative MPP Bob Runciman had issued a press release associating homosexuality with beastiality and child-molestation. Runciman defended himself, saying the press release had been intended only for his eastern Ontario riding.” (Toronto Star, December 3, 1986)

“’Sexual orientation’…could include sadomasochism, paedophilia, bestiality etc.” (Petitions signed and submitted by Bob Runciman, Ontario Hansard, December 1993, March 1994, April 1994)

Runciman called homosexuality “anti-family” and “socially irresponsible”:
“Homosexuality is essentially anti-family. It encourages promiscuous sexuality, a self-centred morality and socially irresponsible behaviour that exacts huge costs from society. The law has every right to discourage people from entering into paths that are demonstratively destructive, physically and psychologically, first to the homosexuals and to society itself.” (Ontario Hansard, November 26, 1986)

Runciman called homosexuality a changeable behaviour and implied homosexuals are immoral:
“They are a class of people linked together through behaviour, not unchangeable status. Their actions are not morally neutral.” (Ontario Hansard, November 26, 1986)

Runciman stood against banning discrimination based on sexual orientation:
“Bill 7, the controversial legislation outlawing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, will be brought into the Ontario Legislature this week and Leeds M.P.P., Bob Runciman, says he will be speaking and voting against the legislation.” (Bob Runciman Press Release, November 24, 1986)

“Adding homosexual behaviour to a list of classes that includes racial and religious minorities makes no sense. It expands the reach of such laws from their initial limits, protecting a particular unchangeable and morally neutral status like race to include an entire galaxy of, shall we say different behaviour.” (Ontario Hansard, November 26, 1986)

Runciman worked to repeal sexual orientation from the Ontario Human Rights Code – three times:
“We believe all references to sexual orientation should be removed from the Human Rights Code.” (Petitions signed and submitted by Bob Runciman, Ontario Hansard, December 1993, March 1994, April 1994)
