According to government documents, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney spent $429.95 in taxpayer dollars on “personalized fortune cookies.” While Liberals look forward to his explanation at Government Estimates on how fortune cookies will help to close the immigrant success gap, here are some fortunes that Minister Kenney might have found:
• Love thy neighbour; just keep it in the closet (and out of the citizenship guide).
• Ask not what New Canadians can do for you; ask what you can do for New Canadians.
• He who throws dirt is losing ground.
• Sun Tzu said: Avoid starting a visa war with Mexico and the Czech Republic on the same day.
Minister Kenney’s department also spent $43,701 on muffins, $22,161 on sandwiches, and $1181 on treats, bringing to mind the following fortune:
• Ideology is to the mind what overeating is to the body.
Finally, Citizenship and Immigration spent over $10,000 on “Rendezvous Rupert,” which offers workshops “meant to inspire and nurture creative self-exploration,” like their “Navigating the Waves Workshop.” According to their website, “Navigating the Waves explores life’s journey to what you want: What helps? What gets in our way? We identify and unpack our stories and beliefs about ourselves, the world, and what’s possible.” Minister Kenney might have been inspired by this nurturing fortune:
• Be patient: one day, you could be Leader of the Opposition.
