Liberal Leader Bob Rae Addresses Party Renewal and Fall Priorities at Summer Caucus

Posted on September 5, 2012

MONTEBELLO, QC— In a speech to Liberals at their summer caucus meeting today, Liberal Leader Bob Rae focused on the next phase of party renewal and the need to create an alternative vision to a polarized Parliament this fall.

“Canadians don’t want to be forced into a false choice between the Tea Party and the Occupy Movement,” said Mr. Rae. “As the ideological divide between the Conservatives and NDP widens, the Liberal Party of Canada will be there with a vision for a government based on innovation, leadership and unity.”

The return of Parliament will give Liberals the opportunity to shed light on important issues facing Canadians. Liberals will be focused on the economy, sustainable resource development and the next generation of Canadian healthcare, as they call on the government to stop abdicating its leadership role in fostering a strong and cohesive Canada.

“Both Mr. Harper and Mr. Mulcair practice the politics of division,” said Mr. Rae. “After last night’s election results in Quebec, Canada can no longer afford such indifference or such deliberate attempts to exploit what divides us in order to score political points. Now more than ever, the federal government must have a plan to bring all Canadians together.  Liberals remain steadfast defenders of a strong, united Canada, and this will continue to be a guiding principle in our party’s renewal process.”

Building on the positive steps taken at January’s successful Biennial convention, the Liberal Party of Canada will keep reaching out to all Canadians as it elects a new leader and continues rebuilding.

“Our last convention saw the Liberal Party become the most open and inclusive political party in Canadian history,” said Mr. Rae. “We will continue to push ahead with real determination, inside Parliament and across the country, to promote an alternative vision to the politics of division that is worthy of Canadians.”
