Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and Quebec Lieutenant Denis Coderre offered their support to those affected by the tragic events that have taken place over the past two days in Mont-Laurier, Quebec.
“I want to express my sympathy to all the people of Mont-Laurier in this difficult time, and offer our support as the community begins to rebuild following the damage of yesterday`s severe weather,” said Mr. Ignatieff.
“The tornado that hit the region of Mont-Laurier has caused serious damage, and we want the people affected to know that we support them during this difficult period,” said Mr. Coderre. “The extent of the damage is shocking to see, but I know that this community will pull together to assist those families whose homes were destroyed.”
In a related tragedy, earlier today a helicopter crashed while filming the damage caused by the storm. CTV cameraman, Mr. Hugh Haugland, and the pilot, Mr. Roger Belanger were both killed in the accident.
“I knew Hugh Haugland well, and wish my deepest sympathies to his family as well as to the family of Mr. Belanger,” said Mr. Coderre. “It is a very sad accident.”
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Roger Belanger and Mr. Hugh Haughland,” concluded Mr. Ignatieff.
