Liberal President Doug Ferguson and National Director Rocco Rossi announced today that the 2009 Liberal Leadership and Biennial Convention will be held in conjunction with a meeting of the Liberal International Executive Committee. This agreement was reached during a recent visit to Ottawa by Liberal International Secretary General, Emil Kirjas.
“We’re glad that we are going to add an international dimension to our Convention,” said Mr. Ferguson. “It will provide an opportunity for Liberals to engage and exchange ideas with other progressive political leaders from around the world.”
Liberal International is an association of liberal and progressive democratic political parties. Established in 1947, its serves as an open forum for Liberal minded leaders worldwide to provide co-operation and the interchange of information between its members.
“The Liberal Party is in the midst of a renewal process and combining the Liberal International Executive Committee’s agenda with our own, will provide fresh ideas as we set a course for the Party for decades to come,” said Mr. Rossi. “I look forward to the collaboration of ideas and the depth of discussion the committee will bring to our Convention.”
Liberal International delegates will have the opportunity to participate in the Liberal Convention and fully engage in debates on issues related to the essence of liberalism, the financial crisis, international security, and human rights.
The 2009 Leadership and Biennial Convention of the Liberal Party of Canada will run from April 30 to May 2, 2009.
