Liberal Statement on Shooting in East Toronto

TORONTO—Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today regarding last night’s fatal shooting in East Toronto:

“We are shocked to hear of the violent acts at last night’s community event in East Toronto and deeply saddened to learn it claimed the lives of two young people.

I echo the sentiments of Toronto Chief of Police Bill Blair in saying that this is a tragedy unlike anything we have ever seen in our city. As we mourn and as we think of those who were touched by these events, I encourage all those who have any information to speak and be heard. We must honour the memory of those we lost by working together to ensure such an event never happens again.”

Liberal MP for Scarborough-Guildwood John McKay continued:

“Last night we lost two young people to a senseless act of violence and the strength of our community was utterly shaken. In this time of mourning we will show that our community is stronger and cannot be undone by any singular event. We will be there to rebuild the feeling of safety and security that was taken from us.

Our thoughts are with those 21 people who were injured, as we wish them a full and complete emotional and physical recovery. And our prayers are with the families of those who were taken from us last night.”
