SHEDIAC, NB— Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Dominic LeBlanc made the following statement on the one-year anniversary of Libya’s revolution:
“One year ago, the people of Libya began their path towards a freer and more democratic society. The strength and conviction that the Libyan people exemplified during their uprising sent a beacon of hope across the world to those who face oppression at the hands of their government.
We are proud of the efforts of the Libyan people and we are proud that Canada played a role in the UN-sanctioned NATO mission that helped protect innocent Libyan civilians. But we must not let our contribution to Libya’s future stop there. Canada has a long historical tradition of assisting newly democratic countries. We must work with the Libyan government to build stronger institutions to protect human rights, and we must play a more engaged role in building and ensuring the foundation of Libyan democracy.
We look forward to the seeds of democracy taking firm root. The upcoming June election will be an important moment for people to give shape to their new vision of a fair and open Libya.”
