The Liberal Party of Canada’s Critic for Veterans Affairs, Robert Oliphant, M.P. for Don Valley West, made the following statement today on behalf of the Official Opposition regarding the damage done to the Fredericton War Memorial:
“As millions of Canadians prepare for Remembrance Day observances to honour Canadian Veterans and the men and women who have served with courage and dignity in the Canadian Forces, I join with all Canadians in denouncing the vandalism done this week to the Fredericton War Memorial.
“War memorials across this country serve as visible markers for the memories of those who have given their lives in service to this country. They are solemn places both of hope and remembrance, worthy of care and respect by all members of the community.
“This cowardly act of desecration will not dampen the resolve of all Canadians to reflect and remember the tremendous sacrifice made by our veterans in the pursuit of freedom, justice and peace. It is a reminder, however, of the fragility of our collective memory and the constant need to safeguard the respect and care for Canadian veterans.”
