Liberals are continuing their work on Parliament Hill today by co-hosting a roundtable on Canadian aviation security and enhanced security measures.
“In the wake of the failed terrorist plot in December, Canadians are questioning the safety of air travel and the effectiveness of our current regime,” said Liberal Transport Critic Joe Volpe. “We need a comprehensive national aviation strategy that recognizes today’s realities while at the same time protecting civil liberties.”
Had the House not been prorogued, the House of Commons Transport Committee would have made a review of aviation security a top priority. Since that is not possible, Liberals are co-hosting a non-partisan roundtable that will hear from experts to analyze the status quo and how aviation security can be improved.
Today’s roundtable brings together renowned specialists in aviation security, top experts on civil liberties protection, along with airport, airline and pilot representatives.
“Canadians expect their government to take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the civil aviation system. To be truly secure, Canada needs to be a global leader in aviation security. The federal government must take a leadership role in implementing a comprehensive strategy to protect Canadians,” Mr. Volpe concluded.
