Liberals Call on all Parties to Support Bill to Prevent Election Fraud

Posted on November 21, 2012

OTTAWA– Liberal MP Dominic LeBlanc made the following statement today on this evening’s vote on his private member’s bill, C-424:

“With evidence of misleading robo-calls, election fraud and other breaches of the Elections Act continuing to grow, there is an urgent and serious need for the changes in Bill C-424. As such, I am calling on all parties in the House of Commons to support this legislation and stand up for democracy.

These changes will give the Chief Electoral Officer the legal standing to challenge election results before the Courts, while also increasing the clearly inadequate financial penalties for elections-related offences.

Now more than ever, Canadians need these provisions to ensure that we maintain a fair and democratic elections process. All parties should support this step in the right direction and vote to strengthen the integrity of our electoral system.”
