The Harper Conservatives continue to thumb their nose at Quebec with their most recent cut to funding for the highly popular FrancoFolies de Montréal music festival.
“Cutting funding to this festival further proves Stephen Harper just does not understand Quebec at all, nor does he care to,” said Liberal Heritage Critic Pablo Rodriguez. “FrancoFolies de Montréal is an international event that benefits Canada’s tourism industry, but also Canada and Quebec’s culture industry.”
Les FrancoFolies de Montréal is an annual eleven-day music and performance festival that features over 1,000 French-language performers from all over the world and attracts over 500,000 tourists to Montreal. Having run for more than 20 years, the FrancoFolies festival is considered to be one of the largest musical festivals in the French-speaking world.
“Not even events that stimulate the economy are immune from the Conservative culture of deceit and intimidation,” added Mr. Rodriguez. “Conservative ideology is now on full display in cuts to women’s groups, cuts to pride tourism funding, cuts to reproductive rights in development assistance, and now further cuts to arts and culture funding,” he concluded.
