PBO Report Reinforces Liberal Position on Maintaining OAS

Posted on February 8, 2012

OTTAWA— Liberal Seniors and Pensions critic Judy Sgro made the following statement today regarding the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s (PBO) report on the fiscal sustainability of old age benefits:

“Today’s report from the PBO reaffirms what we already know: the OAS is sustainable and the Conservatives are pushing an ideological agenda to strip seniors of the benefits they have earned.

This PBO report reaffirms that the Conservative position on OAS is simply fear-mongering.  The increase in spending will be gradual, temporary and affordable. But the Conservatives want permanent structural changes to the OAS that would see seniors working longer and going without tens of thousands of dollars in much needed assistance.

Seniors deserve financial security in their retirement, but this government wants the elderly and vulnerable to pay for its bottom line. Liberals will continue to fight to protect the OAS and for balanced pension reforms that will ensure that Canadians have a secure pension in their retirement.”
