Policy Briefing: Liberal announcements good for Canadian economy

Posted on April 2, 2011

Liberals believe that when families are strong, our economy is strong, which is why our platform announcements put families first – ahead of corporate tax cuts, jets and jails.

When Canadians all have an equal shot at getting ahead, Canada succeeds.

By giving all high school students the same opportunity to access a post-secondary education, the Liberal Learning Passport will help to build the best-educated, most highly-skilled workforce in the world, and solve today’s problem of jobs without people and people without jobs.

By helping families offset the out-of-pocket expenses and lost income from work absences as they care for a sick loved one, our Liberal Family Care Plan will help contain health care costs in the long run.

By reversing Conservative cuts to Family Reunification visas, Liberals are helping to build the economy by attracting skilled workers from around the world, while also providing families with added supports at home, allowing parents to enter the workforce.

By giving children the best start in life with our Early Childhood Learning and Care Fund, Liberals are creating the solid workforce of the future, while allowing more parents who will benefit from affordable child care to enter or return to the workforce.

By helping Canadians save for a secure retirement, the Liberal pension reforms – including our voluntary Secure Retirement Option – mean a healthier economy for the future.

Liberals will pay for better choices without raising taxes on Canadian families by cancelling tax cuts for the largest corporations, and turning the page on the Conservatives’ mistaken priorities of the last five years, like $30 billion for stealth fighter jets, $13 billion for mega-prisons, and $1 billion for the G20 summit photo-op.
