Prime Minister’s Visit to Iqaluit Fails to Deliver Needed Investments in Northern Communities

Posted on February 23, 2012

TORONTO– Liberal Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency critic Dr. Carolyn Bennett made the following statement today on the Prime Minister’s visit to Iqaluit, Nunavut:

“The Prime Minister’s drive-by announcement today provided nowhere near the kind of resources for education, social housing, mental health, drug treatment and food security desperately needed in the north in order to improve the health, education and wellbeing of northern Canadians.

If Canada is to truly benefit from the opening of the Arctic, there must be focused federal investment in northern communities.

Stephen Harper must work with northern, Inuit and First Nations leaders to develop community-based, fully-funded solutions to these vital issues.”
