Reality Check: Conservatives Greenwash Environmental Record

Posted on March 6, 2013

The Harper Conservatives have misled Canadians on their environmental policies, and now they are trying to sell their story internationally.

In comments made yesterday in Chicago, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver praised the Conservatives as having a “green” and successful approach to the environment. This could not be further from the truth.

Here is the reality on the Conservatives’ abysmal environmental record:

Fact: The Conservatives repealed the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act in last spring’s sweeping omnibus budget bill.

Fact: The Conservatives’ sector-by-sector approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions continues to exclude regulations for the oil and gas sector.

Fact: Instead of investing in tangible measures to protect our environment, the Conservatives opted to blow nearly 10 million taxpayers’ dollars on natural resources advertising in the past year – to greenwash their environmental record.

Fact: The Conservatives’ oil sands monitoring program has stalled and failed to deliver. The program was launched over a year ago to monitor air, water and habitat in northern Alberta. While industry agreed to pay up to $50 million annually for the monitoring, there is no governance structure to collect the money or public portal to release the results.

Fact: The Conservatives have failed to engage in any serious debate on climate change. They have consistently attacked the opposition in Parliament and Canadians who express support for a sustainable environment.

Fact: In his Spring 2012 report, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development confirmed that the Conservative greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan is unlikely to meet Canada’s 2020 target of reducing emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels and will, in fact, be 7 percent above.
