Reality Check: Liberals welcome NDP to BC tanker ban debate – six months later

Posted on December 2, 2010

The Liberal Party proposed to ban bulk tanker traffic from the pristine waters of the Dixon Entrance, Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound off the coast of British Columbia – six months ago.

Today, Parliament will debate an NDP opposition day motion in favour of this same policy.

In June, as part of a comprehensive plan to protect Canada’s oceans and coastal communities, Michael Ignatieff committed to formalizing the existing B.C. crude oil tanker moratorium, through regulation, legislation or both, to prevent crude oil tanker traffic through the Dixon Entrance, Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound.

Only a Liberal government can protect our marine ecosystems from harmful oilspills, confirming once again, there are two clear choices in the next election: Liberal or Conservative.
