OTTAWA– Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Dominic LeBlanc made the following statement today on the report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food:
“Today’s report presented to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva by Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Olivier De Schutter, once again singles out on the world stage Conservative policies as short-sighted and damaging to Canadians.
His report underscores controversial Conservative actions that have gutted our ability to measure and help the most vulnerable, notably by eliminating the long-form census, dismantling the National Council of Welfare and slashing funding to Statistics Canada, as well as failing to take on poverty reduction, something Liberals have called for repeatedly.
This report is just the latest example of the Harper Conservatives’ abysmal record of embarrassing Canada internationally. This time, instead of attacking and undermining the Special Rapporteur, it is our hope that the government will finally take meaningful and comprehensive action on poverty and food security in Canada.”
