Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on Aung San Suu Kyi’s By-election Victory in Burma

Posted on April 2, 2012

OTTAWA— Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement on Aung San Suu Kyi’s victory in the recent by-elections in Burma:

“Fair and open elections, impervious to interference, are integral to a healthy democracy. This weekend’s by-elections, and the participation of Ms. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy and other opposition parties, is an important step on the road to democracy and reconciliation in Burma.

These by-elections took place under a tremendous amount of scrutiny from the international community, and we encourage the Burmese government to apply the lessons learned during this election to all future elections.

Ms. Suu Kyi’s victory is a very encouraging sign for the freedom of Burma’s people. We hope this is just the first step to a freer, more democratic Burma. We continue to salute Aung San Suu Kyi for her courage and indefatigable spirit.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I would like to extend my congratulations to Aung San Suu Kyi on her victory.”
