Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the Chinese New Year

Posted on January 23, 2012

EDMUNSTON, NB— Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement on the Chinese New Year:

“Today friends and family in our Chinese communities across the country mark the beginning of a new year and around the world people of Chinese heritage are taking this opportunity to reflect on the year and to look forward to the promises of the future.

Today marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, which is known for its power, passion and drive. The dragon also represents the notion that freedom persists in the face of any obstacle and cannot be contained.

As we gather with family for feasting, exchanging gifts and fireworks, we celebrate the rich culture and traditions that the Chinese people have brought to Canada. The commitment to family, education and community-building are values we all share as Canadians.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I wish you all happiness and prosperity in the New Year.”
