TORONTO– Liberal Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the death of Peter Lougheed:
“It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed.
He will long be remembered as a truly great premier of Alberta, a builder of the modern Canadian constitution, a wise counsellor to many companies and organisations, a philanthropist, and a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He made friends in all walks of life, and made a point of reaching across provincial and partisan boundaries to establish bonds of friendship and mutual respect. Without a doubt, Peter Lougheed was a visionary leader and an exceptional Canadian whose unwavering commitment to Albertans, Canadians and to the unity of our country will leave an indelible mark on our collective history.
On a personal note, I greatly enjoyed working with Peter Lougheed on many issues, and learned much from his example. He was a man of great integrity and decency, and I valued his counsel and friendship.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, Arlene and I extend our deepest condolences to Peter’s wife Jeanne, his children Stephen, Andrea, Pamela and Joseph, and to all Albertans during this difficult time.”
