Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the Resignation of Jean Charest

Posted on September 5, 2012

MONTEBELLO, QC– Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the resignation of outgoing Premier of Quebec Jean Charest:

“The contribution and dedication of Jean Charest to Quebec and Canada, after 28 years in political life, is undeniable. He has always been a great defender of Canadian unity, all the while passionately championing his values as a proud Quebecer.

In recent days, Mr. Charest ran a remarkable campaign that produced results surprising to many. Today, he made the decision to step down from his position as Leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec, leaving his party in good order and ensuring that his legacy will endure in the province he loves so much.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I want to thank Mr. Charest for the many years he has spent defending and promoting Quebec, Canada and national unity.”
