Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement today:
“This February marks the 15th official Canadian Black History Month.
The histories of black Canadians are deeply interwoven into our cultural fabric. From the existence of slavery in Canada before their very first settlements in the Maritimes, to the Underground Railroad, to the tremendous sacrifices made as far back as the War of 1812, the experiences of black Canadians have helped shape our nation’s rich mosaic.
As we celebrate this month, we also pay tribute to those extraordinary individuals who worked so hard to affirm that all of us are created equal, deserving of the same dignity, respect and rights to attain the full measure of our potential. Their legacy lives on in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and its parliamentary caucus, I would like to extend my very best wishes to all for Canadian Black History Month.”
